Quebec Liberal Party leader Dominique Anglade called on the Provincial government to implement a vaccine passport system sooner rarther than later on Tuesday, arguing that the measure is necessary to ensure a safe return to school and work at the end of the month.

“There will always be people who refuse to get vaccinated or hesitate to do so quickly,” Anglade shared in a post on her Facebook page. “That is why I am asking Francois Legault to put a vaccine passport in place, in collaboration with public health, to provide a framework for the activities non-vaccinated individuals may participate in the case of a fourth wave.”

The CAQ government has previously said that some kind of proof of vaccination will be necessary for certain activities in September, but the specifics remain undefined.

The Province of Quebec reported 175 new cases of COVID-19 on Tuesday, increasing the number of active cases to 1,174 out of the 377,973 that have been confirmed since the start of the pandemic According to health minister Christian Dubé, the increase in cases is of greatest concern in the Mauricie region.

The total number of deaths reported across the province remained unchanged, meanwhile, and the number of hospitalizations

decreased by three, but one additional person was admitted to intensive care.

The number of active cases in the Eastern Townships also continued to rise, with 24 in the Sherbrooke area and six each in the Haute Yamaska and Memphremagog areas for a total of 39. No new deaths were reported in the area, and one of the four people in hospital in the region as of Monday’s report went home.

Vaccination in the Eastern Townships has reached 81 per cent for first dose and 64.7 per cent for second doses, which compares to 84.2 per cent and 68.6 per cent provincewide. The Memphrémagog area is the subregion with the highest level of full vaccination, at 68.9 per cent, while the Haut-saint-françois is the lowest, with only 58.1 per cent.
