Sherbrooke launches survey on public transit fares

Record Staff

The Société de transport de Sherbrooke (STS) has launched a survey to hear how users and residents feel about the pricing of the various paratransit and urban transit services available in the city.

The objective is to offer fares that correspond to the reality and needs of STS clientele.

In a press release Marc Denault, president of the STS explained that when it is well adapted to the needs and reality of users, fares become a lever to encourage the use of public transit. “Conversely, it can become a barrier to use when it is too complex,” he said.

According to the transport authority, fares should be structured in such a way as to adequately meet both the mobility needs of citizens and the financial means required by the STS to offer a high-quality service.

“The fare policy ensures the financing of the services, year after year, and contributes to supporting their development. This is why we want to review our fare structure and make the necessary adjustments to adapt it to the needs, preferences and current travel habits of the population,” Denault said.

From Aug. 4 to 25 on the STS website, the survey will highlight various potential fare options for public transit. It will also contribute to a better understanding of customer and public interest in the various payment methods.

Questions will include:

Reasons for using public transport as a primary mode of travel;

Principles and parameters for determining public transit fares; promotion, free travel, $1 events, etc;

Payment methods and fares: mobile payments, smart cards, cash, etc; Interest in new packages.

The STS would like to update its fare structure in collaboration with current and future clientele. The public is encouraged to fill out the survey, available online at parlonssts.ca/fares. Participants will be entered in a draw to win a one-year public transit pass.
