A note on the Bill 96 hearings to Simon Jolin-barrette - Minister Responsible for the French Language

Even though the leaders of all four political parties, as well as independent MNAS sitting on the committee, jointly agreed on the invitation list, the "Language task force wants Bill 96 hearings open to all Quebecers" (The Record, July 29).

The list consists of 50 groups and individuals who have been invited to make presentations at the hearings on the proposed overhaul of the Frenchlanguage charter, at the National Assembly from Sept. 21 to Oct. 7, 2021.

However, there are two groups who also wish to participate at the hearings. Consider their game plan seeking an invitation:

(1) 'The Task Force on Linguistic Policy'

Among other things, mentioned in the article, reference was made by the organization's executive director, businessman Marcus Tabachnick, who said the proposed revamp is "...unconstitutional, small-minded and mean-spirited legislation. It is the equivalent of a kangaroo court."

(2) 'Y4Y Québec' (Youth for Youth)

The anglo youth group: 'Y4Y Québec' is an organization which deals with issues facing English-speaking youth (ages 16-30) across Quebec. It is unique in that it is governed by a youth-led Board of Directors, which has noted their age demographic will live longest to face the "brunt of the changes" in the proposed bill.

President Madeleine Lawler, a 23-year-old civil law student at Université de Montréal, stated that younger generations also have valuable insight and "knowledge about the kind of political strategies that would be very effective in promoting the acquisition of French skills among non-speakers." (Montreal Gazette, July 21)

I hope the Quebec government makes an exception and welcomes the 'Y4Y Québec' group to take part in the Bili 96 hearings. (y4yquebec.org)
