My Take: By Aiden Wilson

The travesties that have become all too common from the American media are some of the worst examples of sensationalization in our day and age. You think it would be so widespread if not for the 15 minutes of fame given to the perpetrators, every time? It’s so commonplace for these abhorrent acts to grip the nation and stir up debate that it’s become like clockwork among the cultural zeitgeist. Yet every single time it seems the conversation goes nowhere beyond sorrow; never towards any form of solution to this epidemic. In fact, I’d go as far to say it encourages it, giving those who commit these vile acts an entire nation’s worth of attention, with nothing done to stop the next beast inspired to do the same. It’s a never-ending cycle perpetuated by our desensitization to the horror, and won’t change until we do.
