It was very exciting for me, serving as President of Patrimoine-ascottheritage (Heritage Ascott), when I received the telephone call, July 8 informing me that our schoolhouse had been chosen as one of the 500 historical place names across Canada. It is quite the reward after many of us senior volunteers have worked tirelessly over a period of 20 years to have the little one-room schoolhouse restored to provide the children of today’s generation the knowledge of how the former generations of children received their early education.

Known as the “Little Hyatt One-room Schoolhouse,” the historic landmark is located at 2185 Ch. Mcvety, Milby, Quebec. Oh, I know to many of the more modern generations it was referred to as the Milby Schoolhouse, named after the present community, but to respect the true history of the area, the first name of the area was known as the Hyatt Settlement, followed by Wilson Mills, then Milby.

As a bonus, our heritage site consists of two large bilingual 4’ x 10’ doublesided interpretation panels, one that even has a voice module, which are all located outside making them available 24/7- a big advantage during COVID-19.

After having been under lockdown for two years, it is a joy to welcome the many visitors from as far away as England, France, Italy, California, Arizona and all across Canada, which naturally includes many descendants of these early pioneer families returning to check their roots. Here they find a vast amount of knowledge on the interpretation panels, which to us proves to be quite rewarding. Kindly pay us a visit as we have a delightful young student serving as a tour guide hired through Canada Summer Jobs.

I hope that this text illustrates how important this recognition as one of the 500 historical place names across Canada has been for us, and we want to share the exciting news with all your readers throughout the Eastern Townships.

SINCERELY, BEV LOOMIS
