There is a community in the Eastern Townships which used to be thriving, but now is not. Its numbers are less. Its buildings are being sold. I am referring to the Christian church community, which is divided into subgroups, one of which is the Anglican, of which I am a member.

Why is this happening? There are many reasons. A basic reason to get at the others is to ask the question: what is religion? Religion symbolizes the belief in the truth of, and worship of, a supernatural power – God, who is the creator and designer of the universe, of life. In the secular society in which we live there is a divide between those who believe in God personally and those who gather with other believers to worship. These are now, for various reasons, considerably fewer. This was made worse by COVID restrictions, and getting used to worsip via Zoom. Yet Corporate personal worship is still important to some people. There are also those who don’t believe in God.

What is being done about this situation at the institutional official Church level? Since I am an Anglican what I am writing is from that viewpoint. An Eastern Townships regional ministry is being set up. Regional ministry is when people in a group of parishes gather together on a rotating basis in each other’s church buildings, and in their own, to worship God. Priests and other worship leaders officiate. People in each parish continue to do ministry.

Regional Ministry enables us to continue to witness to our belief, as a community, to the truth that God IS. That the universe is the prduct of intelligent design, by the creator, who has a purpose, which has been revelaed.

Sincerely with conviction,

JOHN SERJEANTSON
