News from the Lennoxville Curling Club

By Allan Rowell

During the last few weeks, the Sherbrooke Curling Club and Lennoxville Curling Club had been preparing for the visit of the “2023 Scots Tour To Canada” on Jan. 28. Twenty Scottish curlers took on 20 Townships curlers for points towards the Strathcona Cup count. The Strathcona Cup is the oldest international curling event in the world. The unique format has teams from Scotland and Canada facing off every five years, alternating between Scotland and Canada. The eastern portion of the tour started in Halifax on Jan. 12 and by the time the visitors arrived in the Townships, they had already played 24 series of matches at clubs in the Atlantic provinces and Quebec.

Sherbrooke and Lennoxville clubs were privileged and lucky to get to represent the district in this competition. The 2023 visit marked the fourth time the Scots Tour has visited Lennoxville to compete in the Strathcona Cup. Previous visits include the tours of 2013, of 2003 and of 1949.

The Scots arrived by bus from Quebec City in time to be entertained at a luncheon put on by the Sherbrooke Club. After which, two of the teams headed to Lennoxville to play members of that club while three teams remained in Sherbrooke to take on two teams of Sherbrooke players and one team made up of the executive of the Estrie District. When the ice chips had settled, the Scots had pulled off two close victories, had tied twice and lost once - with a difference of plus three rocks towards the Scots Strathcona Cup count.

Following the games, the guests were entertained at a formal dinner at Lennoxville served by members of the club. After welcoming the visitors to the Townships and the clubs, President Ralph Rourke called upon Reverent Nigel Parker to say grace. Jim Mastine, on behalf of the Canadian Branch of the Royal Caledonia Curling Club, also welcomed the guests. Tim Belford, acting MC, gave the assembled teams a history lesson on curling punctuated with a few well-placed jokes. Doug

Wilson, a member of the tour, responded and thanked the members of both clubs for the hospitality.

The evening culminated with the Scots visitors, spurred on by Rev

Parker, singing a couple of Scottish favourites before the Scots launched into a couple of very entertaining musical sketches.

The scores were as follows:
