Maple Leaf, Chapter #2, of the Order of the Eastern Star , donates to Horizon Pour Elles

By Louise Smith

Two chapters of the Order of the Eastern Star, in the Township area, have already made their donations from the division of funds at the provincial level. Owl’s Head Chapter gave to Mental Health Estrie and Cowansville Chapter gave to Maison au Diapason in Bromont.

On Thursday, Feb. 2, Grace Hadlock and Donna Jenne, representing Maple Leaf Chapter, had the pleasure of presenting a cheque in the amount of $6 666.66 to Kathy Brombert, the Directrice of Horizon Pour Elles in Cowansville.

Horizon Pour Elles is a women’s shelter in Cowansville that has been operating since 1982. It helps women to find affordable housing and offers security when it is needed. On its site it leads in with poignant questions….”and if it was more than a quarrel? And if it was domestic violence? Even if you are scared and do not know where to start, call us, 450-263-5046.”

The shelter has been a lifesaver to many since its opening 41 years ago. The shelter accepts financial donations regularly, but it was pleasantly surprised at the amount of the donation from Maple Leaf Chapter. At economic pressures increase across Canada, so do the number of domestic incidents. It is good to know that help is available in our community.
