Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga

By Elijah Jan Johnson Age 10, Lennoxville, Homeschooled Skety: be quiet Khalo: uncle Marhaba: hello

This story is about a girl named Jude from Syria that moved to the USA because there were some bad things happening in her country. She moved to live with her uncle. The aunt is not from Syria but the uncle is. Her dad is still in Syria because he had a shop and he had to attend to it. So, she goes to her new school, and she can’t speak much English. Her mom came with her, and the mom is pregnant. Then she meets a friend whose parents have a restaurant. Her friend also speaks Arabic. So, she signs up for a theatre class. I won't tell you what happens next, you have to read the book.

Overall, this is a really good book. I give it 7 out of 10. It felt slow and fast at the same time. There are short chapters but a lot of them.

Some Syrian words I learned are:
