Wreath ceremony keeps Gibbs Home on the radar
Record Staff
On Saturday evening a commemorative wreath honouring British Home Children, touring Quebec for the first time, made its way to the Gibbs Home in Sherbrooke.
The building, once a distribution home for the newly arrived children from the UK, has more recently housed Sherbrooke organization Actions Interculturelles (AI), which hosted the ceremony.
In addition to the laying of the wreath, the purpose of the ceremony was to highlight the importance of the Gibbs Home as a historic landmark and ensure it remains protected, should the opt for a new location in the coming years.
Elected officials and community members attended the event, which was an emotional experience for many who shared accounts of trying to track down family members, or who were the descendants of British Home Children.
The evening was an educational one for those unaware of the history of British Home Children, and an emotional one for
those sharing the stories of their families.
